Spreading words worth spreading

Originally built by JKN OilTools in Batley, The People Powered Press is recognised by Guinness as the largest letterpress printing press of its kind in the world!

We work in collaboration with community groups, printers, artists and a wide range of writers to co-create large scale letterpress works from our workshop in Salts Works.

We also offer community and private workshop opportunities to write, create and print your own works using this very special press and a wide variety of other workshops that support our community work.

"I'm in awe of the People Powered Press. It’s an incredible feat of engineering and ambition, taking the process of letterpress and leading it into a new and exciting territory."

Anthony Burrill • Printmaker, Artist & Patron of the PPP

'A joyful experience'

— Poet Ian McMillan on printing on the PPP
The People Powered Press was created to amplify local voices and words worth spreading. Built by Batley-based engineering company JKN OilTools, it is now run as a Community Interest Company on a not-for-profit basis.

"It has been amazing working with you guys again, and what a wonderful group of people we have seen connect and share."

Work with us

  • Writing, printing or combined writing and printing workshops are available
  • From half-day taster sessions to in-depth combined writing and printing sessions over several sessions dealing with themes important to the participants
  • Work with poet-in-residence Antony Dunn, or your own writer, to create giant prints and murals for indoor or outdoor display
  • Where possible, part and fully-subsidised workshops  are available for registered charities

What a bloomin’ awesome process and project to be part of! Thanks for the opportunity.

I want a go!

You can have a go on the People Powered Press through one of the PPP's printing workshops. We also run community workshops for local groups — find out more.

Soon, we will have a small number of volunteer opportunities available – to work on the press for either a short time, or on a more regular basis. Give us a shout if you're interested.

And for those experienced in letterpress, you can also get in touch about Hiring the Press.
